North Carolina Headlines: Winston-Salem, May 1954

On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court banned school segregation in a unanimous decision on a collection of cases known as Brown v. Board of Education. The following morning, daily papers across North Carolina broke the news to citizens. In Winston-Salem and surrounding areas, the Winston-Salem Journal reported that Governor William B. Umstead was “terribly disappointed” by the ruling.
