North Carolina Headlines: Greensboro, May 1954

The Supreme Court handed down its unanimous decision on Brown v. Board of Education on May 17, 1954. States across the South scrambled to comprehend what the ruling would mean to the future of their segregated schools. North Carolina was no exception. On the following morning, Arthur Johnsey of the Greensboro Daily News reported that former governor W. Kerr Scott, who was then a candidate for the U.S. Senate, “did not approve of the decision.”
