
North Carolina Headlines: Asheville, May 1954
On the day following the Supreme Court’s decision banning segregation in public schools, dailies across North Carolina broke the news of the ruling. The Asheville Citizen, in the mountain region of the state, reported the reaction of J. W. Byers, the superintendent of Asheville City Schools: “It is not a personal problem for me or for the school board but a problem for all of us.”
