Historical Images: Tuscarora Protest (1973)

On April 8, 1973, a group led by Chief Howard Brooks of the Tuscarora People marched into Raleigh, North Carolina, to demand recognition of the Tuscarora as an autonomous band and better employment opportunities and educational options for the Native American communities of Robeson County. The march began in Pembroke four days earlier and proceeded 100 miles to the State Capitol. In the following days, the protest advanced to North Carolina State University where numerous students joined in the action. (North Carolina State University Special Collections)
