Historical Images: D-Day (1944)

Allied forces invade the beaches of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944, in this iconic World War II photo. According to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, the D-Day operation was the “largest amphibious invasion in military history.” More than 7,000 vessels manned by over 195,000 navy personnel from eight countries combined on this first day of landings to eventually defeat German Nazi forces less than a year later.
