Breaking News: September 10, 1970

On Thursday, September 10, 1970, Tommy Estridge of North Carolina’s The Charlotte Observer snapped this photo of teacher Cindy Edwards joining students on the bus ride to Bruns Avenue Elementary. The 1970-71 school year marked Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s first attempt at busing students to achieve racial desegregation across county schools. Despite some initial pushback, Charlotte would eventually become the national model of effective integration-driven busing.
